Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree. ~ Martin Luther |
Longwood Farm is an urban homestead established on the south side of Chicago in 2006. On our little plot of land we are striving to provide fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey for our own sustenance.
When we arrived in 2006 the only plants growing comprised a lawn. As the front landscape has been established, native plants have been heavily utilized to attract beneficial and pollinating insects. The back and side yards are being designed as a French Portager. All of our horticultural methods are organic and sustainable. We are fortunate to be in an area of the city that does not rely heavily on chemical practices. During the summer we see evidence of this with a healthy bat population, a variety of insects and birds.
Geographically we are located at the bottom of what was once part of Lake Michigan. This provides a very sandy soil with a pH of 7.1. We are located in USDA growing zone 5.
This website will provide an ongoing narrative of sustainable food production techniques practiced at Longwood Farm.
